Rebuilding Post 490
In September 2021, a devastating fire destroyed American Legion Post 490 β a place that for more than 75 years has served as a home for veterans, families, and the South Houston community.
Post 490 is more than a building. It is where veterans find camaraderie, where families gather, and where service to country continues long after the uniform is hung up.
As the largest American Legion Post in Texas by membership, we are determined to rebuild β but we cannot do it alone. With your support, we will restore a place that stands for honor, service, and community for generations to come.
Even without a home, Post leadership has persevered, earned multiple awards, and sustained one of the largest Posts in Texas. Our membership has increased for the first time in three years and is positioned to grow dramatically once our facility is restored.
Building Construction Status
We know this process is taking longer than hoped, and we understand your impatience. Even so, our team remains focused, persistent, and committed to real progress.
Update: September 2026
Our General Contractor, EGA, met with the Post Trustees by Zoom on August 19 and again on September 3, 2026.
The August 19 meeting produced a schedule running through to permit issuance. That schedule carries a Coordinated Resubmittal date of September 18, 2026, along with a base-case permit date and a contingency date.
On September 3, EGA reported that the project is ahead of the September 18 resubmittal date.
This is the first dated permitting milestone we have been able to share since the rebuild began. It is a positive development, and it still depends on execution and on the City of Houston’s review timeline. We will post the outcome of the September 18 resubmittal when we have it.
With limited resources, the Trustees are carefully using our budget where it matters most, directly advancing the project instead of paying for another costly outside resource.
Thank you for your patience, support, and trust as we continue moving this vision forward together.
