American Legion Auxiliary Unit 490
The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 490 is the heart of service at South Houston Post 490. Alongside the Post, our Auxiliary members dedicate countless hours to supporting veterans, active-duty military, and their families throughout our community and beyond.
In the spirit of Service, Not Self, Unit 490 participates in patriotic programs, community outreach, youth development, and veteran care initiatives that reflect the ALA's national mission. Whether it's honoring those who served or nurturing the next generation of citizens, our members answer the call.
American Legion Auxiliary
A Brief History
The American Legion Auxiliary was founded in 1919 β the same year as The American Legion β during its first National Convention. From the beginning, women who loved and supported the men and women who served rallied together to carry the mission forward on the home front.
Today the ALA is one of the largest patriotic service organizations in the world, with hundreds of thousands of members across thousands of units in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and several overseas departments. For more than a century, the Auxiliary has championed the needs of veterans, promoted Americanism, and invested in youth and community programs that strengthen our nation.
Our Mission
"In the spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad."
For God and Country, the ALA advocates for veterans, educates citizens, mentors youth, and promotes patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security.
